Water-resistant buys you time. Waterproof survives the event. A water-resistant floor repels a spill you mop up in ten minutes. A waterproof floor survives a dog accident that sat overnight, a dishwasher hose that let go while you were at work, or a basement that took on two inches in a spring storm.
The difference is the core. Laminate's fibreboard core swells permanently once water reaches a seam, and a swollen plank cannot be repaired — it is replaced. Rigid-core luxury vinyl has no absorbent layer to swell.
Plenty of flooring is marketed as "waterproof" when only the surface coating is. Ask what the core is made of. In our showroom you can drop a sample in a glass of water and leave it there while you look at the rest — we would rather you did.

What Drives the Price of a Waterproof Floor
Wear layer thickness first. It is measured in mils, and it is what decides whether the floor still looks good after three years with a labrador. 12 mil suits a quiet spare room; 20 mil and above is what belongs in a kitchen, a mudroom or anywhere a dog runs.
Then: square footage, tear-out and disposal, and subfloor preparation. Basements are where quotes diverge most — a slab that needs levelling or moisture mitigation adds real cost, and skipping it is why floors fail.

What is the difference between waterproof and water-resistant flooring?
Water-resistant means the surface repels water for a while — wipe up a spill quickly and you are fine. Waterproof means the material itself does not absorb water, so it survives standing water, a burst pipe or a pet accident that sits overnight. Most laminate is water-resistant. Rigid-core luxury vinyl is genuinely waterproof. In a basement or a home with pets, that distinction is the whole decision.
What is the best flooring for dogs?
Rigid-core luxury vinyl plank with a wear layer of 20 mil or more. It is waterproof so accidents cannot soak into the core, hard enough that claws do not gouge it, and textured enough that dogs get traction instead of skidding. Avoid soft or hand-scraped finishes that show scratches, and avoid laminate anywhere accidents are likely.
Can I put waterproof flooring in my basement?
Yes, and it is usually the right choice. Rigid-core luxury vinyl can be installed below grade directly over a concrete slab with a suitable underlayment or vapour barrier. We check the slab for moisture during the measure — a floor installed over a slab that is still giving off moisture will fail no matter how waterproof the plank is.
Is waterproof flooring really scratch-proof?
No floor is scratch-proof, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling. What varies is how well a floor hides and resists scratching, which comes down to wear layer thickness and finish. A 20 mil or thicker wear layer in a textured, lower-sheen finish is what holds up in a house with dogs. Very glossy floors show every mark, whatever they are made of.
How much does waterproof flooring cost installed?
It depends on the wear layer and collection you choose, square footage, whether old flooring has to come up and be disposed of, and how much subfloor levelling or moisture mitigation the room needs — basements often need more prep than the room above. What if my basement floods again after installation?
A rigid-core waterproof floor will generally survive standing water where laminate or carpet would not, but a serious flood still needs proper drying underneath to prevent mould.
