Hardwood Flooring — Quick Facts
Buying Hardwood Flooring in the Hudson Valley
The short version: choose the species and finish in person, not on a screen. Hardwood shifts colour dramatically under different lighting, and a 3-inch web swatch tells you almost nothing about how a floor reads across a whole room. That is the single biggest reason people end up unhappy with a floor they were excited about.
Our showroom carries full boards and large display panels rather than chips, and samples go home with you free. Bring back the two you keep arguing about — that argument is usually settled by seeing them at 7pm in your own hallway.
Once you have chosen, we measure your rooms in person and give you one firm written price covering material, tear-out, disposal, installation, thresholds and trim. Then our own installers do the work. If something is not right afterwards, you call the same family that sold it to you.
Solid vs. Engineered Hardwood — Which One Fits Your Home?
Both are real wood. The difference is what sits underneath the surface, and it decides where each one belongs.
| Solid Hardwood | Engineered Hardwood | |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | One piece of timber, top to bottom | Real wood wear layer over a stable plywood core |
| Refinishing | Many times over its life | Usually once or twice, depending on wear layer |
| Humidity & moisture | Moves more; needs a stable environment | Far more stable; handles seasonal swings better |
| Basements / below grade | Not recommended | Yes, with the right underlayment |
| Over radiant heat | Generally not recommended | Yes, on most collections |
| Typical lifespan | Decades, with refinishing | Decades; limited by wear layer |
| Best for | Main floors you intend to keep for life | Basements, slabs, radiant heat, wide planks |

What Drives the Price of a Hardwood Floor
Five things move a hardwood quote more than anything else: the species and collection you pick, total square footage, whether the old floor has to come up and be hauled away, the condition of the subfloor underneath it, and the fiddly details — stairs, thresholds, transitions, quarter round.
Stairs in particular surprise people. A staircase can cost as much as a mid-sized room, because every tread and riser is cut and fitted individually.
We do not publish a per-square-foot figure, because the honest answer changes with all five of those and a made-up number helps nobody. Call 845-831-4774 and we will measure for free and put a firm number in writing. Financing is available if you would rather spread it.
Hardwood Flooring — Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I buy hardwood flooring near me in the Hudson Valley?
Royalty Carpet & Flooring's showroom is at 1615 Route 9, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590, open Monday to Saturday 9:30am to 6pm. We are an Abbey Flooring Center member, which is how a family showroom carries mills like Mohawk, Bruce, Kährs, Anderson Tuftex, Karastan, Mullican and Fabrica. Call 845-831-4774 before you drive out and we will confirm a specific line is in.
What is the difference between solid and engineered hardwood?
Solid hardwood is one piece of timber throughout, so it can be sanded and refinished many times over its life, but it moves with humidity and is not recommended below grade. Engineered hardwood is a real wood wear layer over a stable plywood core — it handles humidity and basements far better, and can usually be refinished once or twice depending on the wear layer thickness.
How much does hardwood flooring cost installed?
The installed price depends on the species and collection you choose, the square footage, whether old flooring has to come up and be disposed of, subfloor condition, and details like stairs, thresholds and trim. We do not quote a per-square-foot number sight unseen because it is nearly always wrong. We measure in person and give you one firm written price — call 845-831-4774 for a free estimate.
How long does hardwood flooring installation take?
Most single rooms are installed in one to two days once the material is on site. Whole floors typically run three to five days. Solid hardwood usually needs to acclimate in your home for several days before installation, which we build into the schedule rather than skipping — skipping it is the most common cause of gapping later.
Do you remove and dispose of the old floor?
Yes. Tear-out and disposal of the existing floor is quoted as part of the job, so there is no separate surprise at the end. If you are keeping the old floor and going over it, we will tell you honestly whether that is a good idea for your subfloor.
Can you refinish my hardwood instead of replacing it?
Often, yes — and we will say so. If the wood is structurally sound and only the finish is worn, our sandless refinishing restores it for a fraction of replacement cost. We are the same family either way, so we have no reason to sell you a new floor you do not need. See our hardwood refinishing page or ask during your estimate.
What areas do you serve?
We sell and install hardwood flooring across the entire Hudson Valley, including Dutchess, Orange, Ulster, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester Counties — Poughkeepsie, Newburgh, Kingston, Beacon, Wappingers Falls, Fishkill, Hyde Park, Rhinebeck, New Paltz and the surrounding towns.
