Why LVP Became the Default Family Floor

The short version: it is waterproof all the way through, and it no longer looks cheap. Ten years ago vinyl meant an obvious repeating pattern and a hollow sound. Modern luxury vinyl plank uses deeper embossing, longer pattern repeats and better bevels, and most people cannot pick it out from engineered wood at standing height.

That is why it is now the floor most Hudson Valley families choose for kitchens, basements, mudrooms and anywhere a dog shakes off after a walk. Water that would destroy a laminate seam simply sits on top of it.

The honest trade-off: LVP cannot be refinished. When it eventually wears through, it gets replaced rather than restored. For most households the waterproofing is worth that, but if you want a floor your grandchildren sand back, buy hardwood — and we will happily sell you that instead.

All three are sold in our showroom. None of them is the right answer for every room.

What Drives the Price of an LVP Floor

Wear layer thickness is the number that matters most and the one most quotes hide. It is measured in mils — 12 mil is fine for a spare bedroom, 20 mil and up is what you want in a kitchen or a house with dogs. A cheap quote is very often a thin wear layer.

After that: square footage, tear-out and disposal of the old floor, how much subfloor levelling is needed, and stairs and transitions.

We do not publish a per-square-foot number because it would be wrong for most homes. Call 845-831-4774 for a free in-home measure and a firm written price.

Luxury Vinyl Plank & Vinyl Flooring — Frequently Asked Questions

What is luxury vinyl plank (LVP)?

Luxury vinyl plank is a multi-layer synthetic floor made to look like wood or stone. A printed design layer sits under a clear wear layer, over a rigid core — usually SPC (stone plastic composite) or WPC (wood plastic composite). The whole plank is waterproof, not just the surface, which is what separates it from laminate.

Where can I buy LVP flooring near me in the Hudson Valley?

Our showroom is at 1615 Route 9, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590, open Monday to Saturday 9:30am to 6pm. We carry COREtec, Karndean Design Flooring, Armstrong, Shaw Floors, Mohawk LVT, Quick-Step, Congoleum, Beauflor and Tarkett among others. Call 845-831-4774 to check a specific collection is in before you drive out.

Is LVP better than laminate?

For anywhere water might reach, yes. Laminate has a fibreboard core that swells permanently if water gets into a seam, and once it swells it cannot be repaired — the plank has to be replaced. LVP's core does not absorb water. Good laminate can feel harder underfoot and some people prefer its texture, but in kitchens, bathrooms, basements and homes with pets, LVP is the safer choice.

What is the difference between SPC and WPC cores?

SPC (stone plastic composite) is denser and more rigid, so it resists dents and hides minor subfloor imperfections less, but handles heavy furniture and temperature swings very well. WPC (wood plastic composite) has more give, feels warmer and quieter underfoot, and is more forgiving in a room you spend a lot of time standing in. We will show you both in the showroom.

How much does LVP flooring cost installed?

Installed price depends on the collection and wear layer thickness you choose, square footage, whether old flooring has to come up and be disposed of, how much subfloor levelling is needed, and details like stairs and transitions. We measure in person and give you one firm written price rather than a per-square-foot guess — call 845-831-4774 for a free estimate.

Can LVP go over my existing floor?

Sometimes. LVP can often float over sound, flat existing flooring, which saves tear-out cost. But it copies whatever is underneath it — a dip or a ridge in the old floor will telegraph through. We check flatness during the measure and tell you honestly whether going over it will look right or just cost you twice.
